12 Formulas for Eyesight
The Purpose of our ’12 Formulas’ Pages are to illustrate
various formulas used to treat a specific condition on one page.
This can be useful to help Practitioners develop their own Formulas.
The following Formulas are typical of those used to clarify the Sight and improve Vision in Traditional Medicine.
It was typical for most of the powders to be taken with Wine (or Wine of Eyebright, Rosemary, Sage etc.) unless the person had excess Heat in which case Water or a distilled Water is used as a vehicle.

Wine of Eyebright
| Eyebright White Wine | 1 handful 1 gallon |
Infuse, then strain. Take a Small glassful each morning.
Eyebright Powder
| Eyebright Mace | 3 parts 1 part |
Powder. Some added 7 parts of Sugar.
Used for weak or failing Eyesight, Floaters, as well as for Headaches and to increase Memory.
Dose: ½ teaspoonful every Morning
Powder to Clarify the Eyes
| Mastic Eyebright Sugar | 1 dram ea. 2 drams |
Powder.
Used for poor vision or failing Eyesight.
Dose: ½ dram. (Nicholas)
Wine of Eyebright and Fennel
| Eyebright Fennel seed Cinnamon | 2 handfuls ½ oz. 2 drams |
Beat the herbs, put into a bag, and steep in White Wine Take a small glassful each morning for weak or failing Eyesight. (Wirtzung)
Powder to Benefit Eyesight
| Salt Eyebright Nutmeg Cinnamon | 2 oz. 2 dram 1 dram 2 scruples |
Powder. Sprinkled over food when eating. (Riverius)
Eye Powder
| Eyebright Fennel seed Rue seed Mace Sugar | 3 oz. 2 oz. ½ oz. 2 drams 6 oz. |
Powder. Used for debility of Sight, strengthens Memory. Dose: ½–1 dram (Bateana)
Triphala Electuary of Fennel Seed
| Fennel seed Chebulic Myrobalan Emblic Myrobalan Belleric Myrobalan Yellow Myrobalan Rose Savory | 70 grams 10 grams ea. |
With sufficient Almond oil and 400 grams of Sugar, form an Electuary. Used for Weakness of Sight, especially when with constipation. Dose: 15–20 grams. (Unani)
Electuary of Pope Innocent Against Blindness
| Fennel seed Siler montane Germander Stavesacre Celery seed Aniseed Parsley seed Pennyroyal Hyssop Saxifrage Juniper berry | ½ pound 4 oz. 2 oz. 1 dram ea. |
Powder, and with three times their weight of clarified Honey, form an Electuary. Used for failing eyesight, especially in the aged. Dose: 1 dram twice daily.
Confection of Eyebright of Mesue
| Eyebright Fennel seed Clove Cinnamon Cubeb Long Pepper Mace Honey prepared | 2 oz. 5 drams 1 dram 1 lb. |
Powder the herbs and mix with the Honey to form. Confection. The Honey is prepared by being boiled with 1 oz. of Fennel juice, and ½ oz. each of the juices of Rue and Celandine. Used for Failing or Weak Eyesight.
Powder to Cleanse the Sight
| Senna Fennel Betony Eyebright Vervain Rosemary Licorice Mace | ½ oz. 1 dram ½ handful ea. 2 drams 1 scruple |
Powder. Used to cleanse and purge the Head and Eyes, for poor or failing Eyesight associated with excess Humors (manifest with dirty tongue coat etc.).
Dose: ½–1 dram (Wirtzung)
Pills to Preserve the Sight
| Nutmeg Marjoram Cinnamon Cassia wood Rose Mastic Chebulic Myrobalan Aloe | 1 dram ea. 2 drams 8 drams |
Powder and form a pill mass with wine. As the preceding, it is used for poor or failing Eyesight associated with excess Humors. Dose: 1–2 scruples. Taken once weekly to preserve the Sight. (Grulingus)
Powder for Preserving & Quickening Eyesight
| Lovage Ameos Celery Siler Montane Cumin Sage Calamint Annis Cardamon Oregano Dill Caraway Fennel Thyme Pepper Hyssop Parsley Cinnamon Clove Galangal Saffron Pennyroyal | 1 scruple ea. 1 dram. ea. |
Powder finely. To be taken with Food.
