WESTERN CLASSIFICATION of the MATERIA MEDICA

2L. EMOLLIENT

Mollifiers, Demulcents

Emollients are medicines which soften hardness. They are diverse in nature because the cause of hardness itself is diverse, ie. caused by dryness; coldness; excess; with humors or wind.

They are generally warm and moist, as hardness is generally cold and dry. They are used either internally or externally, especially for Fibroids and all hardness, old Bruises, contracted or tight sinews etc.

Demulcents are medicines that relieve inflammation or irritation. However, they are usually put with Emollients as they are similar in effect, both being soothing, softening and resolving.
