TRADITIONAL INTERNAL MEDICINE – DISEASES & FORMULAS

Bedwetting

Nocturnal Enuresis

Bedwetting is the passage of urine during sleep. It may affect children or adults but is most prevalent in young children and the elderly.

Causes range from deep sleep, drinking too much liquid before bed, a small bladder capacity, genetics, constipation, stress or anxiety, sleep apnea, urinary tract infections, diabetes, or overactive bladder muscles.

From a Traditional Medicine perspective it is usually related to either Qi deficiency, or Kidney deficiency. However, some cases, especially in children, are related to anxiety and benefit from herbs such as St. John’s wort to calm the nerves.
