Types of Brain Cancer

There are more than 140 types of Cancer of the Brain and CNS. Common Brain Cancer types include:

  • Glioma–Begin in Brain or Spinal Cord and include:
    • Astrocytomas; various grades based on aggressiveness; survival rates around 68% in 20–44 year olds
    • Glioblastomas; most common primary Brain Cancer; typical survival rate about 12 months.
    • Ependymomas
  • Meningioma–tumor of the meninges (covering) of the Brain; usually non-malignant, relatively common.
  • Pituitary Adenoma–Pituitary tumor that can affect pituitary hormones with wide-ranging effects
  • Medullblastoma–most common in children
  • Neuromas–tumors of nerve cells

Cancers in the Brain are also commonly secondary to a primary cancer elsewhere in the body, especially from Breast, Kidney, Colon, Lung and Melanoma. In the U.S. it is estimated there are over 200,000 metastatic brain tumors annually being the most common form of Brain Cancer.
