Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven)

Massa Medicata Fermentata

Mai Ya (Malted Barley)

Hordei Germinantus

15 grams ea.

Preparation:

The Shen Qu is dry-fried briefly with Bran; the Barley sprouts are dry-fried briefly in a wok until golden-brownish and aromatic. Then powder the herbs together. Mix 27mls water and 60 grams each of white sugar and honey and boil gently to a syrup, then filter. Add the powders and form boluses of 9 grams each.

Function:

Promotes Digestion, relieves Food Stagnation, balances Spleen and Stomach

Use:

1. Food Stagnation with loss of appetite, indigestion, foul breath, flatulence and a coated tongue
2. Good to take after over eating, or for when feeling full, bloated, and tired after eating.

Dose:

One pill is chewed after food, 1–3 times daily

Cautions:

While using this medicine, avoid spicy, greasy and cold food.

Comment:

This medicine contains enzymes which help break down undigested food. Hawthorn increases Stomach enzyme content; Barley sprout contains amylase and the medicated leaven contains a number of digestive enzymes and B vitamins.
