Preparation:
Boil gently in Rain water, press it out and strain through cloth. Add a quantity of well pounded Black Currants, boil together again, then press through a sieve. Next add 1 lb. of Sugar, and boil gently to a Confection
Function:
Clears Phlegm, Stops Cough and Wheezing
Use:
1. Cough
2. Wheezing
3. Asthma
Dose:
1–2 drams
Comment:
It ‘”opens the Breast, to assuage the Cough, and to maturate the Phlegm”. (Wirtzung)
It is interesting to note that Chinese Medicine has a formula composed only of Licorice and Peony. This calms and balances the Liver and Spleen and soothes Spasms to relieve Cramps and Convulsions. Together, they nourish the Qi, Yin and Blood, clear Heat, calm Spasms, strengthen the Liver, Spleen and Lungs, and soothe the Lungs and clear Phlegm to stop Cough and Wheezing. Currants also nourish the Liver, Qi and Blood, and soothe the Lungs. The other medicines help in these effects, as well as helping to clear Phlegm.
