3 1⁄2 oz. ea.

Styrax officinalis

2 drams, 1 scr.

Preparation:

Cut the fruits small, and beat them to a pulp, then push through a sieve. Beat all the other ingredients separately, then beat them together. With Sugar dissolved in Hyssop Water and clarified Honey, of each twice the weight of the rest, form an Electuary according to Art. Some made them into Tablets.

Function:

Strengthens Lung Yin and Qi, Clears Cold Phlegm, Benefits the Throat

Use:

1. Cough
2. Wheezing
3. Breathlessness

4. Asthma
5. Hoarseness, loss of Voice and Throat Irritation from Cold

Dose:

2–6 drams, twice or thrice daily. It was usually taken with a Licorice stick, or decoction of Hyssop, Fig and Raisin. Often held in the mouth until dissolved.

None noted

Comment:

There is also a Diaireos Simplex, composed of Tragacanth Cooling Powder (Diatragacanth Frigidum) and Orris root.

Modifications:

1. Some versions omitted Storax.
