Ren Shen (Ginseng)

Panax ginseng

45 grams

Preparation:

Prepare a Syrup. The Horns are cut into slices, the Turtle shell is crushed, and both are boiled slowly down until well extracted. The horn and shell can be strained and the decoction is boiled further. 45 minutes before cessation of boiling, the herbs can be added. However, it is better to double-boil the herbs separately, strain, concentrate, and add to the other decoction. Honey or Sugar are added to form the syrup..

Function:

Nourishes Yin, Tonifies Qi and Yang, Strengthens the Kidneys, Replenishes Essence

Use:

1. Severe weakness and debility, including that of old age or because of chronic illness.
2. Old age tonic
3. Severe anemia
4. Emaciation
5. Impotence
6. Spermatorrhea
7. Chronic aching and weakness of the lower back and legs
8. Osteoporosis
9. Chronic Dizziness or Tinnitus

Dose:

3–9 grams, once or twice daily, taken with wine, or warm water.

Cautions:

Not used in Heat conditions.

Modifications:

1. With severe Qi deficiency, take with Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang
2. Chronic, long-term Weakness with Qi and Blood exhaustion, take with Shi Quan Da Bu Tang
3. Extreme deficiency, take with Placenta powder and Cordyceps powder.
4. Sciatica, or Chronic Joint disease, take with Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang
5. Severe lower back pain, add Mistletoe (Sang Ji Sheng), Rehmannia Shu Di Huang, Cornus Shan Zhu Yu, Eucommia Du Zhong
6. Impotence, add Epimedium Yin Yang Huo, Cynomorium Suo Yang, Eucommia Du Zhong
7. Infertility, add Cordyceps Dong Chong Xia Cao and Cinnamon (Rou Gui)
