Zhi Zi (Gardenia fruit)

Gardenia jasminoides

6–12 grams

Preparation:

Prepare a standard Decoction

Function:

Clears Heat and Toxin

Use:

High Fever, Irritability, Insomnia, dry throat, thirst
1. Severe Acne, Boils
2. Red Skin Rashes and Lesion associated with Heat-toxicity; Skin infections
3. Severe Tonsillitis
4. Pneumonia
5. Urinary Tract Infections
6. Dysentery
7. Encephalitis
8. Septicemia

Dose:

a small cupful twice or thrice daily; the above can be taken over the course of a day. When prepared as a powder, 1–2 grams can be taken twice daily with warm water.

Cautions:

Only used in Heat conditions

Modifications:

1. Severe Heat-Toxin, or with Constipation, add Rhubarb root. When made as a powder, some practitioners prefer to add Rhubarb regardless as it potently clears heat and toxin.
2. Jaundice from Heat obstruction, add Artemisia Yin Chen Hao and Rhubarb root
3. Urinary Tract Infections add Alisma Ze Xie and Plantain seed
