They do quench Thirst, stay Vomiting, they fortify the Stomach, they draw the resolved inward parts together, and they be very necessary for all that have any Panting or Beating of the Heart [palpitations], they do withstand Sweat, and strengthen them also which be recovered from a long lingering sickness’. (Wirtzung)

This confection admits of Roses for its Basis and Nomenclature, and of many Aromata’s, both to attenuate and concoct crass and frigid humours, and to recreate the Spirits [Qi], and roborate [strengthen] the Native Heat [Yang]; and of some Bechical [anti-tussive] ingredients also, to move and promote spittle. It is sometimes kept in form of a Powder, but more frequently of a soft Electuary, or Opiate. We have omitted some scruples and grains, added, its probable, upon small grounds; to the greater weights; which he that will, may super-adde; for the detriment will be none, and the utility as much. [The version given by Renou had rounded off the doses to eliminate the scruples and grain].

It roborates [strengthens] the imbecile ventricle [weakened Stomach], takes away loathsomeness [poor appetite], discusses flatulency [wind], excites appetite, helps concoction [digestion], incides viscid humours, cures cholical dolours, stays vomiting, and helps the imbecility of the Heart and Stomach, (Myrep[sus]. cap. 214. Sec. 1.) (A Medicinal Dispensatory, Renou, 1657)
