TRADITIONAL INTERNAL MEDICINE – DISEASES & FORMULAS

Parkinson’s Disease

Classically called Shaking Palsy

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive degenerative disease of the Nervous system. There may be spasms, tremors, rigidity, and loss of motor control. It is most common in middle- and old-age. It is caused by degeneration of basal ganglia and dopamine deficiency.

In Traditional Medicine is an age-related disease associated with Yin and Essence deficiency. Depending on symptoms, it can also be classified as a Wind disease, usually being Wind associated with Yin deficiency. Either Phlegm/Damp (moist) or Melancholy (dry).

Ayurvedic research suggests herbs with cleansing therapies (Panchkarma) work more effectively than herbs alone. Oleation of the body is particularly important in Vata (Wind) diseases.

A number of herbs have demonstrated beneficial effects against Parkinson’s: Mucuna, Wild Rue, Cannabis

Related Diseases

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by relentless loss of motor neuron function, usually resulting in death within 2–5 years. Its diagnosis and treatment overlaps Parkinson’s Disease from a Traditional Medicine perspective. Di Huang Yin Zi has proved very effective in some cases (see a case history of a 12 year survivor here)
