TRADITIONAL INTERNAL MEDICINE – DISEASES & FORMULAS

Phlegm

Kapha (Ayurveda), Tan (TCM), Bad Kan (Tibet), Balgam (Unani)

Phlegm can be either a condition in itself marked by excess Phlegm, or related to the Phlegm Humor or a Phlegmatic Constitution. In Humoral Theory, excess Phlegm is viewed as being due to improper digestion and an excess of Phlegm-producing Foods. Therefore, medicines to digest Phlegm mixed with medicines that warm the Digestion is the typical method of treating Phlegm diseases and Phlegm Humor.

Phlegm can be either Hot or Cold. In its own nature, Phlegm is Cold. So a pure Phlegm condition is Cold and Moist. However, Phlegm readily comes with Heat, causing a Phlegm-Heat condition. Cold Phlegm is typically thick and white or copious and clear. Phlegm-Heat may come with hot, sharp phlegm that requires cooling and thickening to enable expectoration. Phlegm-Heat may also be thick and sticky, and hard-to-clear.

  • Phlegm-Cold–Cough with clear or whitish sticky phlegm, pale complexion, heaviness of the chest, short of breath, feels the cold, nausea, pale swollen tongue with a sticky white coat and a slippery pulse
  • Phlegm-Heat–Expectorating yellow phlegm, cough, heaviness of the chest, rattling of phlegm in the throat, bitter taste, restlessness; maybe with confusion or manic behavior, red tongue with yellow coat, rapid slippery pulse
