Preparation:
Mix
Function:
Clears Heat, benefits the Uterus, promotes Conception
Use:
Infertility
Dose:
Take as a dose for 8 days consecutively following Menstruation
Cautions:
Mandrake is narcotic. It is not known if distilling (boiling) destroys or denatures the toxic principle as it does with various other alkaloid-containing medicines.
Modifications:
Wirtzung does not mention when to take it in relation to the menstrual cycle. It is probably intended to be taken directly after menstruation.
Mandrake has a long history of use in Infertility, which is reputedly first mentioned in the Bible. Genesis XXX 14–16 tells how Leah and Rachael, daughters of Laban, both wished to bear sons to Jacob. Rachael was successful only after taking Mandrake root. Some have questioned the identification of this plant as Mandrake.
Research in India is said to have shown that Infertile women given Mandrake extract seem to consistently conceive boys.
