Niu Bang Zi (Burdock seed)

Arctium lappa

Lian Qiao (Forsythia)

Forsythia suspensa

Ma Bo (Puffball)

Lasiosphaera et al.

Ban Lan Gen (Isatis)

Isatis tinctoria

Bo He (Mint)

Mentha haplocalyx

3 grams ea.

Jiang Can (Silkworm)

Bombyx mori

Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga)

Cimicifuga foetida

1.5 grams ea.

* Scutellaria Huang Qin and Coptis Huang Lian are stir-fried with wine

Preparation:

Coarsely grind the ingredients and take as a draught. (Source text)
Also can be prepared as Honey pills, or prepared as a standard decoction.

Function:

Clears Wind-Heat, Resists Poison

Use:

High Fever, Chills, Red, swollen and painful Face, head or throat, red tongue with a yellow coat (or red with dryish white coat), and a strong and rapid pulse.
This is primarily used in children and abolescents.
1. Influenza
2. Common Cold (with strong Heat symptoms)
3. Mumps
4. Severe Sore Throat, Tonsillitis
5. Upper Respiratory Tract Infection
6. Pneumonia
7. Viral Myocarditis
8. Suppurative Otitis Media
9. Dermatitis
10. Furuncles, Carbuncles, Boils, Abscesses (especially of the Head)
11. Herpes Simplex, Herpes Zoster
12. Conjunctivitis, Red, Sore and swollen Eyes
13. Cellulitis
14. Lymphadenitis

Dose:

If the powder is used as a draught, the dose can be 3 grams each time (less for young children)
As a decotionthe above is divided into 3 equal doses to be taken over the course of a day.
Pills can be taken in a dose of 2–3 grams, three times daily.

Comment:

This has a history of successful use in the treatment of Epidemic diseases in China, especially in Children.

Cautions:

Use carefully in Yin deficiency.

Modifications:

1. Constipation, add Rhubarb Da Huang. Rhubarb is a good addition in any case.
2. Hard swellings of the parotid glands or lymph glads, add Self Heal (Xia Ku Cao), Mudan Peony (Mu Dan Pi), Red Peony (Chi Shao Yao), Fritillaria Bei Mu.
