Dang Gui (Chinese angelica)

Qiang Huo (Notopterygium)

Notopterygium incisum

15 grams

Preparation:

Grind the Cannabis seed into a paste, powder the remaining herbs and mix the powder and paste with a little Honey and form Honey-Pills approximately 5mm in diameter.
Alternatively, all the herbs may be powdered together and mixed with Honey to form Pills.

Function:

Moisten the Intestines, Nourishes the Blood

Use:

Constipation with Blood deficiency marked by Constipation with hard and dry stool in old or weak people, lethargy, dizziness and palpitations, pale tongue, faint pulse.
1. Habitual Constipation in the old or weak
2. Constipation with Anemia

Dose:

12 grams on an empty Stomach with warm water, either morning or night.

Cautions:

Use cautiously during Pregnancy and avoid full doses.

Modifications:

1. Qi stagnation with Abdominal pain or bloating:
i. add Costus (Mu Xiang), immature Bitter Orange (Zhi Ke)
ii. Betel nut (Bing Lang), Costus (Mu Xiang)
2. Qi deficiency, add Ginseng
2. More severe Blood deficiency:
i. Take with Si Wu Tang
ii. increase the dose of Dang Gui and add Rehmannia Shu Di Huang.
3. with Blood Stasis, increase the dose of Peach kernel and add Safflower (Hong Hua)
4. More severe Dryness, add Ophiopogon Mai Men Dong.
5. A more compound version adds Rehmannia Shu Di Huang, Rehmannia Sheng Di Huang, Bitter Apricot kernel (Ku Xing Ren), Orange (Zhi Qiao), Scutellaria Huang Qin, Magnolia bark (Hou Po), and Licorice. This is used for Constipation with dryness, Heat and Qi stagnation.

Similar Formulas:

Ma Zi Ren Wan is similar, but is focused on dryness with Heat in the Intestines.
