Bai Jie Zi (Mustard seed)

Sinapsis alba

Su Zi (Perilla seed)

Perilla frutescens

Lai Fu Zi (Radish seed)

Raphanus sativus

6–9 grams ea.

Preparation:

Decoction. The seeds are crushed, put in a cheesecloth bag and decocted.

Function:

Clears Cold Phlegm, Directs Qi Down, Reduces Food Stagnation

Use:

Cough, Wheezing, excess clear sputum, poor appetite and digestion, a white slippery tongue coating and a slippery pulse.
1. Chronic Bronchitis
2. Asthma
3. Breathlessness, difficult Breathing
4. Emphysema
5. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
6. Obesity

Dose:

The above is taken in three equal doses over the day.

Cautions:

Not for heat-type Cough

Modifications:

1. More Cold with excess Phlegm, add Pinellia Ban Xia and Ginger (Gan Jiang).
2. Cough or Asthma with thick, white sputum, take with Er Chen Tang.
3. Cough with Spleen deficiency add Atractylodes Bai Zhu, Poria Fu Ling
4. Chronic Cough, add Coltsfoot (Kuan Dong Hua), Apricot kernel (Xing Ren)
5. Asthma, add Earthworm (Di Long)
6. Asthma with Kidney Yang Deficiency, take with Shen Qi Wan.
