TRADITIONAL INTERNAL MEDICINE – DISEASES & FORMULAS
Scoliosis & Kyphosis
There are several varieties of Spinal distortion:
- Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine, usually in the form of an “S” or “C” shape. Around 2–6% of the population are affected with Scoliosis although this depends on the country. Some sources have stated that the worldwide incidence of Scoliosis is up to 10%.
- Kyphosis is a foreward curvature causing slouching or hunchback.
- Lordosis is excessive inward curvature of the Spine
Causes
These conditions can be associated with conditions such as Muscular Dystrophy, although in most cases the cause is unknown. Posture and the habitual carrying of things such as schoolbags on one shoulder can be contributing factors. Scoliosis can also be due to one leg being shorter than the other.
Chronic and severe Kyphosis, especially in the aged, is often due to Kidney deficiency.
In Traditional medicine, Wind and Qi stagnation can be associated with poor posture and poor spinal alignment. Medicines that relieve Wind and Spasm can be used internally, while emollient mediicnes can be used externally. Cupping, Massage, Acupuncture and Manipulation can all play a role in treatment.
Practices such as Yoga and postural work are important adjunct therapies.
