Preparation:
Beat all into a fine powder, and form an Electuary with 3 times their weight of Sugar dissolved in White Wine.
Function:
Clears Damp, promotes Urine, Breaks Stones
Use:
1. Specific for Gravel and Stones of the Kidneys and Bladder
2. Obstruction of the Kidneys and Bladder
3. Gently promotes Menstruation
4. Wind-Colic
Dose:
1–2 drams with wine.
Comment:
Prepared Goat Blood is the main medicine and was long considered a specific for Gravel and Stones. The Goat was preferably fed on diuretic and Stone breaking herbs for a month before being killed and the blood collected. It was dried, then powdered for use.
Many seeds of the Apiaceae are used in this formula, all being Warm and good to clear Wind and Damp, the breeders of Stones.
Cautions:
None noted
Modifications:
The number of ingredients in this formula can be reduced. There are many seeds of the Apiaceae which can be reduced. Likewise a number of herbs have similar functions such as Ginger and Galangal, and Valerian and Indian Spikenard. Therefore, it is easy to greatly simplify this formula. Also, in some cases, such as Lovage, the root may be used in place of the seed.
