Best Honey Mel 2 lbs.
Spirit of Wine Spiritum Vitae 2 lbs.
Fine, white, dry sand Arena 3 lbs.

Preparation:

Digest in a warm place in a sealed bottle; strain, and evaporate in B.M. to the thickness of Honey.
Some used ‘Spirit of Wine twice rectified from Carminatives’, meaning Brandy distilled from carminative herbs which will carry their virtues across with the menstruum.

Function:

Strengthens Lungs, Increases Qi

Use:

1. Chronic Cough
2. Asthma
2. Shortness of Breath
3. Consumption
4. Hectic Fever (Yin deficient Fever)
5. Heart weakness
6. Promotes Strength and Vigor
7. Incfeases Intellect
8. Improves Complexion
9. Useful tonic for the Aged

Dose:

2–3 spoonfuls, usually taken in some suitable Pectoral Decoction etc.

Cautions:

None noted

Modifications:

The Tincture of Honey, is very nourishing and strengthening, increases Qi, and nourishes the Yin. It supplies very good nourishment in weakened and wasting bodies and is especially useful for the Aged.
 
This was “accounted by authors as the highest remedy against an Asthma, Phthisic [Consumption], and an inveterate Cough”; also for shortness of breath.
 
Recommended by various authors as a valuable treatment in Hectic Fever and Consumption, being given twice daily: “Beguinus prescribes it rather to the true Hectical, or such as are in deep Consumptions, to be given daily, Morning and Evening, either alone, or in some Pectoral Decoction”. (Salmon)
 
It also benefits the Heart (for which Avicenna commended it), and is therefore useful in Heart disease, especially in the old and weak. Traditionally regarded as promoting Strength and Vigor, improving Intellect and Will, and improving the Complexion. (Bates, Salmon)
