Herb Name Latin Amount *
Mastic in fine powder Pistacia lentiscus 1 oz.
Tartarised SV (or SV) * Spiritum Vitae Tartar 6 oz.

Preparation:

Set in a sealed vessel and digest in a gentle warmth for 14 or 20 days, shaking daily. Then decant the clear liquor and keep for use. More SV can be added if not all has been dissolved in the first dissolution. Some abstracted a third or more to make it stronger.

Function:

Strengthen the Stomach, Benefits Qi

Use:

1. Nausea, Vomiting
2. Indigestion
3. Poor Appetite
4. Stomach Pain
5. Gastric Ulcers
6. Diarrhea
7. Cough
8. Headache
9. Vertigo

Dose:

20–60 drops or more in a glass of wine or Sherry etc.

Cautions:

None noted

Modifications:

“It is an excellent Cephalic and Stomatic, strengthening the Stomach in all its faculties; it stops Vomiting, and helps the retentive faculty, causing a good digestion”.
“It stops fluxes of the Bowels of all sorts, helps against spitting of Blood, and is good for Coughs, Colds, Catarrhs, and fluxes of Rheum; it takes away Acrimony, and represses all sorts of sharp humours”.
“It is prevalent against most diseases of the Head, Brain and Nerves and Megrims [Migraine], Vertigos, Lethargies, Apoplexies, Epilepsies, Palsies [Paralysis], Convulsions, and other diseases of those parts”.
“It cures pain and sickness at Stomach, and represses vapors arising from the Mother [Uterus]”. (Bates, Salmon)
