Tincture of Valerian,

Lesser Sweating Tincture

Valerian Valeriana officinalis 6 oz.
Salt of Tartar Potassium carbonate 1 oz.

Preparation:

Grind together in a hot Iron mortar, then put in a vessel, covering with Tartarised S.V. (or Brandy), 16 oz. Digest for 14 or 20 days. This gives a red colored Tincture. Alternatively, Tincture of Salt of Tartar can be used instead of using Salt of Tartar and Tartarised S.V.

Function:

Settles Wind, moves Qi, and clears Phlegm and Damp

Use:

1. Headache, Migraine
2. Anxiety
3. Vertigo
4. Epilepsy, Convulsions
5. Insomnia
6. Cramps

7. Amenorrhea, Dysmenorrhea
8. Hysteria, PMS
9. Angina Pectoris
10. Tachycardia
11. Topically for arthritic pain, cramps,

Dose:

10–20 drops.

None noted

Modifications:

    It is Warm and dry, pungent, bitter and Aromatic. It settles Wind, moves Qi, and clears Phlegm and Damp.
    Good for the Head, Brain, Nerves, Stomach, Bowels, Intestines and Uterus. It opens obstructions of these organs, eases pain, and stops Colic.
    It strongly calms Wind and Spasm, and thereby eases pain. Very good for Headache, Migraine, Anxiety, Vertigo, Epilepsy, Convulsions, Insomnia, Cramps etc.
    It strongly promotes Menstruation, and eases pain associated with suppression of the same. It is also very good for Hysteria.
    Also used to calm and regulate the Heart, and may be used for Tachycardia and Angina Pectoris.
    In addition, it may also be used to promote Urine, and is good for Cold, Wind and Damp Joint pains, for which it can also be used topically.
    Traditionally commended against various Poisons.
