Preparation:
In Ayurveda, the herbs are powdered, mixed with Bdellium and formed into pills.
In Unani, it is prepared as an Electuary, mixing the powders with Honey.
The Bdellium can be dissolved in Water and the other herbs in powder added to form an Electuary.
Function:
Moves the Blood, Clears Toxin, dries Damp, mild Laxative
Use:
Classically mostly used for Hemorrhoids and Fistula.
1. Damp obstructing Digestion; nausea, poor appetite, indigestion, bloating
2. Edema, fluid accumulation, Obesity from Damp
3. Cough, Bronchitis, Asthma, from excess Phlegm
4. Rhinitis, Post-nasal drip
5. Hemorrhoids, Anal Fistula
6. Inflammation of the Anus
7. Boils, Abscess
8. Arthritis, especially acute arthritis
9. Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Sciatica
10. Goiter
11. Atherosclerosis, High Cholesterol
12. Leprosy
13. Wound healing, Fracture
14. Regarded as cleansing in chronic or recurring infections, allergies, cold or Flu, Boils etc.
Dose:
500mg–1 gram of the Pills
5–10 grams of the Electuary:
Cautions:
1. Not used during Pregnancy
2. Not used in chronic Diarrhea
Modifications:
1. If there is also signs of Pitta (Bile), Bitter herbs (Andrographis, Swertia, Gentian etc.) are added; or take with Kaishor Guggulu
2. If there is excess Vata (Wind), add moistening tonic herbs are added (Asparagus root etc.), or it is combined with Yogaraja Guggulu
3. Urinary conditions, take with Tribulus, or Punarnavadi Guggulu
4. Excessive Damp, add Ginger and Black Pepper or. Trikatu
5. Mesue had Pills of Bdellium, combining Bdellium with Myrobalans, adding Pearl, burnt Coral, burnt Shells and Amber. This is specifically for Bleeding Hemorrhoids, and also to stop excess Menstruation.
6. National Formulary of Unani medicine has a version (Pill) for Blind Hemorrhoids which adds Sagapen (one-third weight of each Myrobalan) and Mustard seed (one-sixth weight of each Myrobalan).
7. Another Unani Pill specifically for Hemorrhoids adds Barberry extract, Amber, Dragon’s Blood and Pomegranate flower.
8. Another version from Pharmacopoeia Persica added Goat’s Rue seed, Leek seed and Fumitory seed.
9. Yet, another version from Pharmacopoeia Persica added Turbith and Mastic. This is better for Phlegm and Damp.
