FORMULARY OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE

Troches

Troches are powdered medicines formed into small biscuits, discs or cakes. They were originally invented as a better way of preserving Powders, especially for travelers, or as an easy way of keeping medicines for administration.
Their method of preparation is initially as for making a powder. The powder is then mixed with a liquid, often a clarified herb juice, mucilage, wine, syrup or Honey preparation (such as Oxymel). A stiff paste is then prepared which can be rolled flat, cut into shapes of consistent size, and dried. Once dried, they are easily stored or packed and may then be easily administered with a uniform dose.
