TRADITIONAL INTERNAL MEDICINE – DISEASES & FORMULAS
Wind
Vata (Ayurveda), Feng (TCM), rLung (Tibet), Rih (Unani)
Wind is of the Air Element and its nature is moving. When it is acting physiologically, we can call this “Qi”. The smooth movement of Qi regulates all body systems and allows for controlled movement of the body. When Qi movement is erratic or moves incorrectly it manifests as diseases of the Nervous System When Qi rises upwards, it causes Wind diseases. Wind disrupts smooth nervous function and causes irregularities in body function and movement
Types of Wind.
Wind diseases can be divided into either Internal or External (after Chinese Medicine):
- External Wind manifests as acute conditions like Cold and Flu (Wind-Cold or Wind-Heat) and is dealt with elsewhere.
- Internal Wind is synonymous with the erratic movement of Vital Spirit (Qi).
Differentiation of Internal Wind
Wind usually comes with either Phlegm (sometimes called Cold) or Heat, can be acute or chronic, and can come from excess or deficiency.
- Wind-Heat conditions may be associated with Fever or Inflammation and will tend to be more acute.
- Wind-Phlegm have signs of Phlegm, excess mucus, a thick or greasy tongue coat
- Deficiency can be Yin Deficiency (dryness aggravates Wind) or Yang Deficiency.
