Chen Pi (Tangerine peel)

Citrus reticulata

9 grams

Sheng Jiang Pi (fresh Ginger peel)

Zingiber officinalis

6 grams

Preparation:

Powder.
It can also be prepared as a decoction.

Function:

Resolves Damp, Promotes Urine, Strengthens Spleen

Use:

Edema, heaviness, fullness and distention of the abdomen, difficult urinartion, labored breathing, greasy white tongue coat and a deep pulse.
1. Edema (Nephritic, Cardiac, during Pregnancy)
2. Protein deficiency Edema
3. Chronic Nephritis
4. Chronic Glomerulonephritis
5. Ascites from Cirrhosis
6. Congestive Heart failure
7. Asthma
8. Hypertension

Dose:

As a powder, take 6–9 grams as a draught in hot water.
As a decoction, the above is divided into 3 equal doses to be taken over the course of a day.

Cautions:

1. Not used in Yin deficiency or dryness
2. Use cautiously in marked Spleen deficiency (or add Spleen tonic herbs)

Modifications:

1. Edema during Pregnancy, add Corn Silk (Yu Mi Xu)
2. Edema of the Lower Body, add Stephania Han Fang Ji and Water Plantain root (Ze Xie)
3. Severe Edema take with Wu Ling San
4. Severe Edema from Kindey Yang deficiency, take with Shen Qi Wan
5. Also for Edema of the Lower Body, add Poria Fu Ling, Red Bean (Chi Xiao Dou), Plantain seed (Che Qian Zi), Stephania Han Fang Ji and Water Plantain root (Ze Xie)
6. Damp obstructing the lower abdomen, add Plantain seed (Che Qian Zi) and Stephania Han Fang Ji
7. Damp-Heat in the lower abdomen, add Plantain seed (Che Qian Zi) and Phellodendron Huang Bai
8. Spleen deficiency add Codonopsis Dang Shen, Atractylodes Bai Zhu
9. Internal Cold, add Ginger (Gan Jiang) and prepared Aconitum Fu Zi
10. With concomittant Constipation, add Rhubarb (Da Huang) and Immature Orange (Zhi Shi)
11. Chronic Glomerulonephritis use much larger doses (30 grams of each herb)
12. Nephrotic Syndrome, take with Dang Gui Shao Yao San
13. Also for Nephrotic Syndrome, take with Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan
