Bai Zi Ren (Biota seed)

Xi Jiao (Rhino horn) **

Cornu Rhinoceros

Fu Shen (Poria core)

Poria cocos

Chen Xiang (Aloeswood)

Aquilaria sinensis

15 grams ea.

* Mother of Pearl typically substituted for Pearl in a dose of 20–30 grams
** Water Buffalo horn is used today in place of Rhinoceros horn in a dose 5–10 times that of Rhinoceros horn. If the concentrated extract (10:1) is used, it can be used in the same dose as for Rhino horn.

Preparation:

Powder and form Honey pills. Traditionally coated with Cinnabar.

Function:

Nourishes Yin and Blood, Calms the Heart and Spirit

Use:

Irritability, restlessness, insomnia, anxiety, with a thin pulse.
1. Irritability, Restlessness
2. Anxiety with Palpitations
3. Insomnia or Restless Sleep

Dose:

2–3 grams, twice daily with warm water.

Cautions:

None noted

Modifications:

1. Mother of Pearl usually replaces Pearl, Water Buffalo horn (extract) is used instead of Rhinoceros horn, and Codonopsis Dang Shen is typically used in place of Ginseng.

Comment:

This was originally made with Pearl powder and called Zhen Zhu Wan. Nowadays, Mother of Pearl is used due to the expense of Pearl and it is now commonly called Zhen Zhu Mu Wan.
