Preparation:

Powder

Function:

Stops Cough, Clears Phlegm, Opens Obstructions of the Lungs

Use:

1. Acute Cough; Especially useful when a Cold or Flu has resolved, but a Cough remains
2. Acute Bronchitis
3. Whooping Cough
4. Early stage of Viral Pneumonia
5. Emphysema
6. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Dose:

6–9 grams after meals and before bed with warm water

Cautions:

Not used for Cough with Heat or Yin deficiency

Modifications:

1. Acute Cough from Wind-Heat, add Mulberry leaf (Sang Ye) and Peppermint (Bo He)
2. Acute Cough from Wind-Cold, take with a decoction of fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang)
3. Stronger Heat symptoms, add Scutellaria Huang Qin
4. Stronger Cough, add Apricot kernel (Xing Ren)
5. For thick Phlegm, add Pinellia Ban Xia, Fritillaria Chuan Bei Mu, Mulberry root bark (Sang Bai Pi)
